During recent years, the concept 'human security' has become a rallying point for understanding and working with processes of (human) development in unstable environments marked by social and environmental conflicts. Particularly the growing challenges posed by global environmental changes threaten to trigger a rapid escalation of conflicts throughout the world as competition over access to scarce resources intensifies, supplies of essential commodities dwindle and global population rates continue to increase. Our approach is collaborative. We partner with those who can improve policy and practice. By providing practical support, these partnerships enable us to bring about lasting change.
PEDA International approach to focus on the human security and sustainable livelihoods on the following broader areas:
- Ecological resilience and sustainable livelihoods: While economic viability provides strong incentives for humans to maintain their land, cultural values and spirituality that play equally crucial roles in sustaining livelihoods and well-being in rural communities. PEDA International international conducts researches that promote ecological resilience and sustainable livelihoods/food security at households, communities at national level.
- Community-based social protection – mechanisms by which social safety nets and coping strategies are provided and sustained at community-level. Social assistance – resources, either cash or in-kind, are transferred to vulnerable individuals or households. These transfers can be unconditional for households to re-establish or further develop means of living that contribute to human security
